When I was in 5th grade, my best friend Kaitlyn moved away. As young kids it was devastating for us, the thought of not seeing each other every breathing moment of the day. Because of this, all throughout middle school and high school, Kaitlyn and I would send letters to each other through the mail. I probably still have many of them tucked away in a shelf at home. Writing letters to each other is probably the reason why we are still best friends to this day, although we are both away at college now. We could have easily kept in touch just through text, (which we also did), however, as I have learned class after class during my Letter Writing first year seminar, letter writing holds a different level of sentiment and meaning. Most of our letters weren’t all that heart felt (we were young kids when this started after all), but the action of sitting down to handwrite and decorate a personal card for each other was really purposeful. I specifically remember we had a phase where we would send each other stickers inside the cards we sent for each other to use in our next cards. Part of the reason I actually selected the letter writing FYS class was because of this personal experience. It has been really interesting reading other letters and exploring the meaningfulness in those as well.
